All I know is that the fake Cuban setting doesn’t really interest me but the bad guy being played by Giancarlo Esposito does. I guess the question is how many times can that happen before it’s too much? Is 6 the limit? 7? 8? I really don’t know. I’ve enjoyed the previous games but I have to admit that 3, 4, and 5 were all basically the same game in a different setting, and so apparently is 6. I know it reviewed okay but the main problem is that it’s more of the same, and I’m not sure I do want more. It is chunky and does not have a lot of features. The camera app itself is not a patch on the minimalistic app used by the HTC Desire 816. Also present is the regular suite of Google apps.Īfter a wonderful experience with the 13-megapixel shooter on the HTC Desire 816 we had a lot of expectations from the 8-megapixel camera on this phone. There is the competent Polaris Office 5 app for viewing, creating and editing documents. It is a good thing that BlinkFeed can also be turned off. BlinkFeed occupies the left-most homescreen, and it still showcases content from various social networks and any feeds you want to add. The software is no different from what we saw running on the Desire 816. The company has promised an update to Android Kitkat, though. Instead, HTC has decided to go with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and Sense 5.5. Unlike the HTC One (M8) and its younger sibling One (E8), the Desire 616 Dual SIM doesn't have either Android 4.4 KitKat or HTC Sense 6 UI slapped on top of it. Unfortunately, when viewed at an angle there is very evident discolouration, and sunlight legibility isn't great either. The colours on the screen have a pleasant warm tone, and the saturation level and the maximum brightness level are decent too. On-screen capacitive buttons take up a bit of the display real estate but we don't think it is too much of a problem. The Desire 616 Dual SIM's 5-inch screen has a resolution of 720x1280 which translates to a pixel density of 294ppi. HTC has added FM radio as an option for entertainment. The 2-megapixel front camera can shoot 720p videos. It also has an 8-megapixel primary camera which can shoot 1080p videos. The phone can connect to Wi-Fi a/b/g/n networks. The primary SIM card (regular) can connect to 3G networks while the secondary (Micro) cannot. The phone has a Dual-SIM setup - one regular (Mini) SIM and the other Micro-SIM. The 32GB limit is a bit of a downer since even cheaper phones support higher capacities. Supplementing it is 1GB of RAM, and there is 4GB of internal storage space with the option of adding up to 32GB more using microSD cards. HTC has gone with the octa-core MediaTek MT6592 SoC clocked at 1.4GHz with Mali-450MP4 graphics. On the rear are the loudspeaker, an HTC logo, and the primary camera with its flash. Beside the earpiece are the array of sensors and the front camera. Above the screen is the earpiece grill which looks like the front-firing speakers on the Desire 816. The tactile feedback of these buttons is pretty good. The right edge of the Desire 616 Dual SIM has the volume rocker and power button, both made of plastic. The microphone and Micro-USB port for charging/data transfer are on the bottom of the phone, while the top has the 3.5mm audio jack. The Desire 616 Dual SIM feels comfortable to hold and our thumbs could reach the top of the screen with ease. Thankfully, the curved back makes the phone look slimmer than its actual girth of 9.15mm. The toughened glass protecting the screen flows till the lower edge. It feels inconsistent here because there is no matching strip on the bottom. There is a good looking strip of matte plastic above the screen which continues around the device's sides a design cue borrowed from the Desire 816. The Desire 616 Dual SIM is made entirely of plastic and its glossy back looks cheap. The HTC Desire 616 Dual SIM adheres to this design language but changes things around a bit, though we don't think it works favourably this time. HTC's smartphone designs of late have followed a trend which started with the One (M7) ( review). With powerful new competition and cutthroat pricing to deal with, HTC will have to do a lot of work in order to stay relevant. However, there has been a sudden tectonic shift in the smartphone market created by Xiaomi and Asus. 16,990, which looked like a good bargain at that time. The Desire 616 Dual SIM was launched at a price of Rs. The HTC Desire 616 Dual SIM is the company's great hope in the sub-20k market, and to keep costs low, HTC has opted for a MediaTek processor to it. Latching on to this positive outlook, HTC announced the Desire 616 Dual SIM along with the One (E8). Many reports are now suggesting that the sales of the HTC One M8 and the Desire 816 are helping to revive the Taiwanese phone company's declining fortunes. Thus, Godai is aware he can’t always forget about those violent thoughts but instead strives to avoid escalating the problem, even when he believes he is in the right: fighting evil. However, in this episode, when one of Yusuke’s friends has vengeful thoughts on someone, he states: His body is healing faster, and his friends’ concerns about the future are actually a set up for the dangerous powers he would soon obtain, putting his own humanity to the challenge, as witnessed from a vision in episode 35, where he is shown as an “ultimate warrior.” Even though each fight makes him stronger, by helping him achieve new evolutions and gain new weapons, the changes on his body are a growing concern for his friends. In episode 41, “Control,” there is further emphasis on how Yusuke doesn’t enjoy hurting others, despite his similar powers to the Grongi. This scene highlights how the powers of Kuuga can go either way - as a light or a threat to his own happiness. The music becomes eerie, indicating that Kuuga is now the hunter but at the same time emphasizes the emotional pain Godai feels. Not letting up, Kuuga continues punching the Grongi and uses a large amount of his arsenal against him. Pushed by the fears of the student he is trying to guard, Godai fights against this Grongi. Yusuke, aka Kuuga, becomes overcome by rage at the number of people he hasn’t been able to save from the previous episodes. Such events include episode 35, “Emotion,” where Yusuke fights a Grongi hunting and hurting school kids for fun. This connects to the main protagonist, Godai Yusuke, who is a carefree individual who can be considered a paragon character (a type of hero that is regarded as the “ultimate” champion of concepts, such as truth, justice and honor) in regards to fighting for the smiles of others - making certain that later events are even more impactful. Thus, the show does well in setting up ideas such as, “If violence is needed to stop violence, how does it stop?” This is explained later in the series with how humanity is still fighting with one another even without the Grongi, despite the fact the Grongi were defeated to avoid such violence. Starting with Ichijo, he experiences the distorted views of the villains first-hand when working with his fellow officers to fight an invisible Grongi in episode 22, “Game.” The Grongi describes his happiness with killing people, stating that it’s “fun.” In the same episode, Ichijo encounters one of the leaders of the Grongi, Ra-Baruba-De, who states that the humans they faced long ago have now changed. Some of the main antagonists include N-Daguva, the strongest of the Grongi, and Ra-Baruba-De, the judge of the Grongi’s “game.” This lethal game developed by the Grongi is the central conflict of the series as it showcases the pain that can be inflicted on others when fighting for happiness. Some of the main characters who try to help stop the Grongi consist of Godai Yusuke, aka the new Kamen Rider Kuuga, and Kaoru Ichijo, an officer of the Science Police force who works with Kuuga. They end up returning after being sealed away by the ancient warrior Kuuga. They are, in reality, an ancient tribe of people that terrorized the ancestors of modern-day humans in the show’s universe. “Kamen Rider Kuuga” revolves around the hero, Kuuga, fighting monsters known as the Grongi. Episodes of this show can be found on YouTube and on the ShoutFactoryTV site. With 49 episodes and a short running time of 20 minutes for each, only some of the main plot points will be reviewed below to emphasize the theme of fighting for others’ happiness rather than simply the happiness of oneself. I recently decided to look back to this old show to appreciate the themes found within its story. The Toei Company produced the show in 2000 but released it in the United States just last year in May 2020. Photo from IMDb.įor some background,“Kamen Rider Kuuga” is a Japanese Tokusatsu show featuring superheroes and special effects, and is one of the first installments of the series in the Hesei Era of Japan (The Heisei era is the period of Japanese history corresponding to the reign of Emperor Akihito from Jan. Kuuga, the main character of “Kamen Rider” dedicates himself to fighting monsters guilty of terrorizing ancient humans. The secret bases and fossils still hide in the walls, but Pokémon Hideaways are now present deep beneath Sinnoh. Thankfully, the Grand Underground, as it’s now called, adds new features which make it the kind of place more trainers will actually want to visit. You could dig for fossils, create a secret base, and play capture the flag with friends – all fairly fun activities – but none of which get into the core of what Pokémon is all about. Catching and battling Pokémon is the name of the game, and in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, the Underground was a place where you couldn’t do those things. The Underground is another feature that received a significant update for Brilliant Diamond, and it’s one I appreciated a lot. From different trainers having different Pokéball throw animations (hikers calmly throw them underarm whereas youngsters absolutely yeet them) to the earth-shattering overhaul that means you no longer have to keep a designated HM-user (I wouldn’t have forgiven the game if that change wasn’t made), Brilliant Diamond does make a few really nice tweaks that benefit the experience as a whole. Angry Team Galactic boss man with his giant head and little grumpy frown was a treat to behold. The presentation made me care about the characters in the story, at least a little bit. You see Team Galactic’s boss become increasingly power-drunk towards the climax of his story, and Professor Rowan and Dawn react to frightening events with facial expressions which, whilst far from cinematic, do exactly what they need to do. Despite the cutesy style, it really did add personality to the characters in the story. The whole feel of the game felt like a step back from the 3D Wild Area of the newer Pokémon games and not nearly enough of a step forward from the pixel art of the originals. The giant heads on the characters just felt silly to me, and compared to both the classic pixel-style of the DS titles and the new cartoony vibe of the likes of Sword And Shield, I was far from impressed. I despised the look of the overworld characters in the game from the very first trailer to the moment I booted up the game onward. It’s not really a ‘love it or hate it’ thing either. The art style can’t be ignored when talking about Brilliant Diamond. There should also be an option to decline this kind service for those of us who just want to beat up Team Galactic and evolve our starter into a penguin with a fork on its face. Sure, new players need as much of an introduction as possible, so it’s completely understandable for an NPC to show the way to the first gym. This was further drilled home by control being taken from the player a few times early on in the game. Maybe Brilliant Diamond would change too little and go down in history as a lacklustre attempt to capture the magic of its original. Quality of life tweaks are my favourite thing about modern Pokémon, such as being able to run without having to traipse through a few routes and help the professor. It didn’t last long, but Pokémon games have evolved in recent years in many ways, some positive, some not. This is where Brilliant Diamond started to lose me. 15 years later, I don’t have the patience to walk around without running shoes or sit through tutorials for a game I played to death throughout my childhood. Coronet because I forgot to bring a Pokémon with Rock Climb with me.Īt the start of the game, I began to feel the inconveniences of gaming back in 2006. It’s the carefree days of youth I miss, not trudging back and forth through Mt. I can freely admit these days that the games are far from perfect. It’s impossible to divorce the feeling from the experience. The first time my Piplup and I stepped out of Twinleaf Town for an adventure with that annoying blond kid who kept bumping into me was special.
